Professional Qualifications for Teaching in the Archdiocese of Chicago Elementary Schools (includes Early Childhood Education, Middle School, and Junior High)
Policy 210.1 All teachers newly employed by a school, full-time and/or part-time, are to be state certified as a teacher.
Certification
- Requirements must be completed prior to start of teaching duties
- State of Illinois or other state (Type 03, 04, 09, 10, 29 or equivalent)
- Endorsements are encouraged
- Substitute Certificate (Type 39) is not acceptable
Religious Education
The prospective teacher shall have or be willing to obtain during the first three years of employment four courses or Continuing Education Units (10-clock hours each) in theology, religious education, and catechesis.
PLEASE NOTE
The Certified Teacher applying to a particular school must first apply to the Office of Catholic Schools in order to complete a credential file (detailed below).

The Office of Catholic Schools screens and verifies the professional background of the prospective teacher. A written notification is sent to the candidate when the file is complete. The approved candidate may then approach local school principals to apply for a teaching position. Annual written contracts are signed with the local Catholic school. No contract shall be valid and binding unless and until this written notification has been received by the principal and a positive background screening has been confirmed.
