NATIONAL DISTINGUISHED PRINCIPAL AWARD GOES TO LONG-TIME ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO EDUCATOR
CHICAGO (December 6, 2004) – Richard Guerin of St. Bede the Venerable School, 4440 W. 83 rd St., is among a dozen principals from across the United States to receive the 2004 Dr. Robert J. Kealey Distinguished Principal Award from the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA). The award honors outstanding educational leaders from the twelve geographic regions that comprise the NCEA Department of Elementary Schools. These principals were chosen from a possible pool of more than 7,100 principals.

CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TESTS ARE SATURDAY, JANUARY 8
Placement tests for Catholic high schools throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago will take place simultaneously on Saturday, January 8, 2005.
The test is open to all eight-graders in Catholic, private or public elementary schools who plan to enter any of the Catholic secondary schools in Cook and Lake counties. Advance registration is not necessary. Students should report to the high school they wish to attend at 8 a.m. on January 8 with two No. 2 pencils and a check or money order for the $25 exam fee made payable to the school.

CHICAGO (September 2004) - The Center to Promote Student Success is a new initiative of the Archdiocese of Chicago Office of Catholic Schools’ Inclusive Education Program. New Assistant Superintendent Appointed for archdiocese of chicago’s Secondary Schools
CHICAGO (July 21, 2004)
Dr. Nicholas Wolsonovich, superintendent of schools for the Archdiocese of Chicago, has announced the appointment of Paul Maloney as the new assistant superintendent for high schools for the Archdiocese. Maloney will work with the 41 secondary schools, most of which are administered by religious orders.

CREATE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP

The Schools of St. Benedict, Alphonsus Academy and Center for the Arts and the DePaul University School of Education have entered into a partnership that will create a professional development program at the schools focused on designing and implementing custom curricula in the areas of science, mathematics and the arts. The initiative, scheduled to launch in August 2004, will result in heightened educational experiences for teachers and students at all three institutions.

VOLUNTEERS TO RENOVATE
ACADEMY OF ST. BENEDICT THE AFRICAN SCHOOL

A group of more than 350 volunteers from Leo Burnett will roll up their sleeves to renovate Academy of St. Benedict the African School on Chicago's south side. As part of the company's Give Back Day, volunteers will paint, refurbish and landscape the building and surrounding grounds at the school's campus at 6020 S. Laflin Street on Friday, May 21.

East-west campus model to help meet changing needs of area families

Officials of the Archdiocese of Chicago have accepted the recommendations of six southeast suburban Catholic elementary schools that a single new multi-parish- sponsored school be established. The new school, scheduled to open in August, will operate two sites – an east campus and a west campus – to help meet the changing needs for Catholic education in the area, according to Dr. Nicholas Wolsonovich, superintendent of schools.

CHICAGO (February 5, 2004) – Archdiocese of Chicago elementary and secondary schools throughout Cook and Lake counties will celebrate African American Heritage Month throughout the month of February.
“In celebration of the rich heritage of African Americans, schools in the Archdiocese of Chicago will host liturgies, performances and educational programs that honor the importance of preserving the culture and character of diverse groups,” said Nicholas M. Wolsonovich, Ph.D., superintendent of Schools. “Our schools observe African American Heritage Month in an effort to call specific attention to the many contributions that African Americans have made to our society. In celebrating this year’s theme – Kuumba – the Kwanzaa principle meaning creativity, several activities will illustrate the spirit of creativity as students study their ancestors and discover the creativity that lives in each of them.”

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS COLLABORATE ON NEW MODEL OF EDUCATION
Schools to provide integrated curriculum from preschool through college
CHICAGO (January 22, 2004) – A group of 16 Catholic elementary and secondary schools, located principally on the northwest side of Chicago, and three universities are collaborating on an initiative to create a new model of education.
The model is scheduled to pilot later this spring and will focus on providing students with a continuous and progressive Catholic education experience from pre-kindergarten through college.

Eighth graders win berth in national finals with 23rd century Martian city project
that salutes rover explorations and bi-centennial of Lewis & Clark expedition
CHICAGO (January 28, 2004) – A team of five eighth-grade students from St. Barnabas Catholic School in Chicago’s Beverly neighborhood have won first place in the 2004 Regional Future City Competition. The winning creation, “Lewis & Clark, the City of Discovery,” a proposed community on the planet Mars 200 years in the future, won St. Barnabas a berth in the national finals competition in Washington, D.C., next month. The competition is sponsored by the National Engineers Week Committee of the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is the second time the south side Catholic elementary school has won the regional title.
St. Barnabas claimed the national title in 2001.

More than 90 percent of students who take the test are accepted into the school of their choice. Admission letters with testing information will be sent postmarked by February 15. Each of the high schools in the Archdiocese is State certified and accredited by the North Central Association, the largest regional accreditation organization in the United States, which evaluates and accredits schools and requires professional development for teachers.
