Photo Caption: Infant Jesus of Prague School 7th grader, Aliyah Griffin reads her Character Diary on Monday, November 21, 2011. The student completed the activity based on a novel study for teacher, Ms. Nancy Szelag's course Infant Jesus of Prague School students learn from a Class-based Project Educational theorist, Benjamin Bloom (1956) stated that students compiled information together in different ways, combined elements in a new pattern or proposed alternative solutions in a process called synthesis. Synthesis, defined by the theorist, was identified as the second highest level of learning. Students of Infant Jesus of Prague School Language Arts teacher, Ms. Nancy Szelag attained a high level of learning through activities which built knowledge and skills prior to a project. The project was based upon the novel by author, Kate DiCamillo titled, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.” Szelag reviewed vocabulary, read chapters aloud, checked for understanding and completed various informal assessments. The teacher offered various choices to her Junior High students for a final project. William Knox designed a model of the lead character, rabbit Edward Tulane. Joseph Piunti created a Venn Diagram which compared the character to another famous figure, Jesus Christ. Kelly Mindak built a doll as a model of Tulane and included a brief summary of the story. 7 th grader, Aliyah Griffin wrote a diary of the main character’s feelings. Requirements for the publication included appropriate format, layout and identification of chapters for the Character Diary. Teacher expectations were high for the complex study of the novel, “The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.”

The inspiration of children was the story of author Mike Knudson and illustrator Stacy Curtis. Students of Infant Jesus of Prague School delighted at the creations of the pair. They told stories, drew wonderings and took time and taught about the writing process. On Friday, November 4, 2011 the Infant Jesus of Prague PTO sponsored the Author’s Day event. The PTO brought Mike Knudson and Stacey Curtis. The duo combined for the Raymond and Graham book series. Their authorship was rewarded in the 2010-2011 New Mexico Land of Enchantment Book Award. The author and illustrator presented the creative process. While Knudson orated, Curtis drew his expressions. Knudson encouraged students’ writing. He said, “Even when you think you made the perfect story, you can improve it.” The author challenged the students to think in the superlatives of good, better and best.

Queen of Peace Theatre Visits Courtroom for Play Inspiration

In preparation for the fall play, Twelve Angry Jurors , Queen of Peace High School’s cast and crew members spent an afternoon in the courtroom of his Honor, James F. Holderman, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinoisat the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago. Bridget Kancler, director, wanted to expose students to an actual courtroom prior to creating the acting space for the play and portraying the roles of the jurors. St. Laurence High School cast and crew members joined the field trip that encompassed visiting the court room, sitting in the jury box, asking questions of the Judge and his staff, as well as interacting with attorney, John Kennedy (father of Queen of Peace senior and stage manager Colleen Kennedy). Students listened carefully to another judge during questioning of prospective jurors. The play , Twelve Angry Jurors , is an intense drama that becomes personal for each character. Every juror perceives the defendant and the circumstances of the case differently. Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and each person’s definition of “truth” is brought to the forefront. The jurors’ final verdict and how they reach it will engage and challenge viewers with powerful scenes that keep the audience on the edge of their seats through an unforgettable dramatic encounter. The real-time courtroom experience will serve as inspiration that the student actors can tap into during their upcoming performances. The presentation of Twelve Angry Jurors will take place at Queen of Peace High School, located at 7659 South Linder in Burbank, on November 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. and November 19 at 8:00 p.m. The cost for tickets is $5 for students and seniors, and $8 for adults. Tickets are available at the door, and the entrance to the auditorium is on the north side of the building. For more information, go to www.queenofpeacehs.org or call 708-458-7600.
