<title>Archdiocese of Chicago Schools Support for Haitians </title>
      <link>http://schools.archchicago.org/OCSNewsWire.aspx?ArticleID=1562</link>
      <description>       St. Martin de Porres
St. Martin de Porres’ celebration of Catholic Schools week revolves around service. SMdP World History classes hosted a timely guest speaker, Mr. Justin Smith, who spoke about his missionary experiences in Haiti. Students viewed pictures of mission schools, orphanages and Haitian people, and heard reports of the difficult living conditions. Students were asked to compare aspects of their own lives—morning breakfast, electricity—with the typical Haitian lifestyle. At the close of the presentation, SMdP students overwhelmingly expressed a desire to help the people of Haiti.

The Executive Student Council and the Sophomore Council recently raised $885 for Haitian relief. Funds were generated by two uniform dress-down days--during which students paid for the privilege of wearing jeans in lieu of a uniform--and a food sale. The proceeds will be split between Catholic Relief Services and the American Red Cross . The National Honor Society will also be collecting donations to the American Red Cross during their Blood Drive on February 19. The public is welcome to support this effort by donating blood or money, or both!

St. Albert the Great “Hats for Haiti”

Students of St. Albert the Great raised $550.00 to donate toward Catholic Relief Services , who are helping Haiti earthquake victims. Students were allowed to wear a hat during school if they brought in a donation for the cause.

    St. Athanasius School

St. Athanasius School faculty and staff are donating money for Haiti Relief. Hawks for Haiti (they are the Redhawks) collected $415.79 in the first 2 days! The money is being combined with their Parish-wide effort to be donated toward victims.

    Marian Catholic High School

The leadership of the Marian Catholic High School Student Council facilitated a "dress down day" to raise money for victims of the recent earthquakes in Haiti. With nearly 100% participation of students and staff, over $5,300 was collected and distributed to The American Red Cross and Catholic Relief Services .

    St. John Brebeuf

In an effort to teach their students to be involved, giving citizens of the world, Saint John Brebeuf held a prayer service for victims of the earthquakes in Haiti. They felt it was important for students to understand that these are children and adults just like us, who have experienced unimaginable loss and devastation. The Student Council gave the students information about Haiti, and what life is like there. The students learned that Haiti is the most densely populated and poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Mrs. Lynn Baer, Student Council Moderator, described life in Haiti compared to life in the United States. Did you know that 80 percent of Haiti's population lives under the poverty level, and 70 percent of the population is unemployed? Following this information we prayed for the people of Haiti and all the relief efforts going on. Students raised $1,500 to send to the Catholic Relief Service as of January 22.   Among the many donations was a Mickey Mouse piggy bank full of change from one of the kindergarten children.

Our Lady of Destiny Dress Down for Haiti

Our Lady of Destiny , the Parish School of St. Mary and St Stephen in Des Plaines has 167 students. They held a "dress-down for Haiti" ($2.00 to wear jeans) and collected $900 that was sent to the American Red Cross . An additional $2 dress down enabled them to collect $1050, which will be sent to Catholic Relief Services .

    St. Daniel the Prophet School

St. Daniel the Prophet School had a "Dress Down Day" on Thursday, January 21 for relief in Haiti. Contributions were accepted in any amount not the usual fee that is charged. Over $1,000.00 dollars was raised for the relief program. A check will be sent to Catholic Charities to be used for Haitians needs.

    St. Catherine-St. Lucy School

St. Catherine-St. Lucy School students are giving the proceeds from all of their fundraisers for the remainder of the year to Catholic Relief Services for the people of Haiti. Fundraisers include:

       Out of uniform days
       Nacho and cheese days
       Pennies for Haiti contest

     St. Barnabas Elementary School

Student Council will sell hearts for a dollar and students’ buying the heart will put his/her name on the heart. As the hearts are purchased, they will form a gigantic heart in the school lobby. This is the hearts for Haiti campaign that will run through Feb. 12 and end with a prayer service, remembering the people of Haiti.

St. Paul of the Cross School Parents and Students Prepared Food for Haitians

On Saturday, January 16th, the third grade Girl Scout troop #651 and seven boys from St. Paul of the Cross School participated in a service project. Thirty-six St. Paul of the Cross parents and children met Fr. Britto in St. Paul's parking lot. They traveled to an organization called, Feed My Starving Children ("FMSC") in Aurora. Voluteers helped fill boxes of food for the Haiti relief effort. FMSC is a Christian-based organization that seeks "to eliminate starvation in children throughout the world by helping to instill compassion in people to hear and respond to the cries of those in need". Their website is www.fmsc.org .

Tasks students and parents participated in included measuring a chicken (protein) mixture, dried vegetables, soy and rice. Additionally they were in charge of weighing the packages of food, while others needed to label each of those food packets for shipment to Third World countries. Special attention was given to Haiti, where FMSC is trying to direct increased shipments to the people devastated by the recent earthquake.

After different groups completed a box with 36 food packets, you would hear them cheer things such as "2, 4, 6, 8...feeding children is really great!" or "children feeding children...hooray!" After their shift was over, they were given the opportunity to pray over the boxes of food that they worked hard to prepare for shipment. Additionally volunteers were informed that during their time at FMSC, they had prepared over 16,100 meals (which is enough to feed 45 children for an entire year). The children were beyond excited to share in God's ministry. A couple of the children even said that they wanted to have their birthday parties there, and wanted to go on class field trips to FMSC in order to help feed more starving children.
